Vans Team Kills Metallica Orion Fest

The unique perks and bizarre situations that one finds themselves in thanks to skateboarding never ceases to amaze. A perfect example that instantly comes to mind is when Steve Caballero and the legendary Bones Brigade found themselves invited to Beatles guitarist, George Harrison's, home for his son's birthday in the 80s. Over two decades later skateboarding is bigger than ever and it seems Cab is still the man with the clout to get us invited back stage. This time around it's a much different four-piece band than the Fab Four but still renowned and revered the world over...on the weekend of June 23rd and 24th, 2012 on a sweltering weekend in Atlantic City, NJ the Vans team found itself hanging out with Metallica at their brand new concert festival, Orion Fest.
As you well know 2012 marks the 20-year anniversary of Steve Caballero's Half Cab and each month we're rolling out a limited edition Half Cab to celebrate. In preparing for this year a number of artists and bands names were batted around to do collaborations with. At one meeting Cab said, "It would be pretty awesome if we could get Metallica to do a Half Cab." It doesn't hurt to ask and turns out they were down. In October the all black to the floor Metallica Half Cab with the Kill Em All album cover on the soles will be released.
Since those initial meetings a real friendship has blossomed. Cab and Trujillo have been jamming with the band and Tony Trujillo has even been having late night sessions at his house with Metallica bassist, Rob Trujillo, and with Tony's wife, Trixie, have started a side project called The Trujillo Trio. So when it was announced that Metallica was going to host a two-day music festival with dozens of bands from a mix of genres it only made sense for us to build a Vans ramp and fly out some of the team to shred for the concert-goers. Tony Alva, Steve Caballero, Christian Hosoi, Omar Hassan, Johnny Layton, Keegan Sauder, Josh Borden and Tony Trujillo did not disappoint. With Sepultura playing live right behind them and tens of thousands of people taking in the shredding on the ramp and the stage the dudes put on a performance that will not be soon forgotten by anyone in attendance.
Here are just some of the photos from this past weekend. Look for an Adventures With Chris episode with all the footage from the demos when the Metallica Half Cab drops in October.
Hosoi flys over Metallica's Rob Trujillo.
The crowd went wild for TNT.
Omar Hassan spent most of the weekend in the air.
The man who inspired the Metallica Half Cab Collaboration, Steve Caballero.
Hosoi's kit was pretty tame compared to most in the crowd.
Hosoi does every trick the way you daydream about doing them. Solid and stylish every single time.
Johnny Layton frontside airs from low to high.
Keegan Sauder frontblunts in his crispy new Metallica shirt.
Josh Borden's tailgrab is #1.
Keegan, Omar, Mike Muir & Cab.
Omar Hassan catches his heelflip indy so far out I'm surprised his shoulder didn't pop out.
Tony Alva casually backside airs for 25,000+.
Tony Trujillo, boneless.
Right after Tony's frontside ollie he took the stage with Metallica's Rob Trujillo.
Metallica's Rob Trujillo and Trixie and Tony Trujillo=The Trujillo Trio.
The crew with Metallica's Rob Trujillo.
Yup...frickin' Metallica laying it down.
The first night they played the Ride The Lightening album in it's entirety.
And we had the best seat in the house.
Thanks to all who came out to show love and support!
