Skateboarding legend Steve Caballero has accomplished so much during his 30-plus years of skating, he's one of those rare guys who is known simply by his nickname, Cab. As an original member of the Bones Brigade, the eighties skate super team that Stacey Peralta envisioned to redefine skateboarding, Cab appeared in perhaps the most famous skate video of all time, The Search for Animal Chin. Cab has invented tricks including the Caballerial and the frontside boardslide and, in 2009, Cab and Vans celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the first-ever signature skate shoe, the Vans Caballero, while 2012 sees the twentieth anniversary of the longest running and "greatest" skate shoe of all time, the Vans Half Cab.

What’s the best trip you’ve ever been on?
This last trip to Brazil and Argentina with my wife Rachael, Christian Hosoi and Steve Van Doren. Have you ever been on a a tour with Steve Van Doren? it rocks! It was my first time to Buenos Aires and it was a blast. The Argentineans were super stoked and we had a very warm welcome there!
What is the best story you’ve ever heard or been told?
The story on the life of Christ, Jesus. By far the best story ever told. It has the power to change lives if a person can only humble themselves enough to have faith in it.
Favorite Vans rider?
Christian Hosoi because he was meant to ride a skateboard and I love to travel with him. He’s fun, loving, wise, very entertaining and, did I mention? … he rips!
What trick can’t you do that you wish you could?
Mute 540’s: McTwists.
What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you?
I ignored God for 41 years of my life and was left with no hope or a true purpose for living. I felt like I was just existing on this planet with no rhyme or reason. But that all changed when I got Saved and gave my life over the Christ, Jesus to be my Savior.
Worst trend in skateboarding right now?
Smoking and drinkin’ beer.
What are some interests outside of skating?
Hotrods and kustoms, motocross, skim boarding, snowboarding and toy collecting.
Last good book you read?
The Bible because it’s full of wisdom and knowledge to help me understand the will of God and how His word pertains to my life for guidance, understanding and purpose. The bible is full of stories about how God has intervened in people's lives and how He used terrible situations and turned them into good and useful life lessons. When they let God be in control of their lives, they experience the Grace that has been given through His son, Christ, Jesus for all those who fall short of His glory and are stuck in their own sinful ways.

You and Jim Thiebaud were on Powell together at one point. Do you have any memories of his fantastic ponytail?
No, but I do remember his awesome launch ramp frontside wallrides…amazing!
For a while there you were getting a ton of coverage skating handrails. What made you get into handrails then?
I've always liked boardslides in bowls and ramps so it came natural to me when I learned to ollie on the street. I started off learning tricks on small flatbars then adapted these tricks on real handrails.
When was the last time you skated a handrail?
It’s been a while because I just don’t have the same passion to ride them as I did in the late nineties. Then one year, I was just over slamming on them. Yes, I've gotten served on a few and it wasn't pretty. Handrails are no joke and they can be gnarly at times.
You’re big into toy collecting. What specifically are you into collecting?
I like stuff from my childhood, from the early seventies. Toys like Evel Knievel, Planet of the Apes, Ultraman from Japan, and MEGO 8” action figures .
What’s your most prized piece in your collection?
I don’t really have a specific one. They all have sentimental value to me in one way or another.
You’re also into classic cars. What cars do you have?
These are the cars I have previously owned and own at the moment:
1959 American Rambler (sold)
1930 Ford Model A (sold)
1935 Ford 3W Deluxe coupe with a '51 Merc flatty
1965 Ford Econoline truck
I’m working on a dry lakes modified 1938 Chevy truck at the moment--still collecting parts for it--this hotrod will be designed and built by me this time.
We’re all pretty stoked to see Cab art out there more and more. Has that been something you’ve always been into?
I have always loved art since middle school and high school but never really got serious about producing it until about 6 years ago when I picked up a few acrylic paints and a brush.

The first annual Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ NYC took place Saturday and it was an overwhelming success. The Chelsea Piers bowl got sessioned like it never had before. Pedro Barros won it all in the Pro division by skating like a bat out of hell while Lance Mountain took Masters by shredding with the grace of an angel.
