BIO...
Anthony Van Engelen (or AVE, as he's affectionately known) has been killing it at the pro level for more than a decade now, ever since going pro in 1999 at the age of 21 for Alien Workshop. Van Engelen, a San Diego native, spent six months of his formative teenage years living in Russia without a skateboard. More than anything, it made him really appreciate skateboarding. He returned to the USA on a mission and turned pro four years later. Regardless of the era in skateboarding, AVE has always exuded a natural, raw style on his board. He's like a bull charging at everything in his path. Van Engelen began riding for Vans in '05 and in '09 was honored by Transworld SKATEboarding with the Best Video Part of the Year award for his part in Alien Workshop's Mindfield. AVE is a certified (and certifiable) classic.
ANTHONY VAN ENGELEN INTERVIEW...
What shoes do you skate?
Old Skool and AV SK8-LO.
What’s your set up?
7.75 Workshop board, 52mm Spits, Swiss bearings and Independent 129s.
What’s the best trip you’ve ever been on?
Miami, 2000. We were partying and skating our balls off with Freddy [Gall]. It was an epic trip on all levels. I don’t know how anyone could stay out partying all night and still get that much shit done. But we did.
What is the best story you’ve ever heard?
Dill told it to me and it was told to him by Jack Osborne. Ozzy was walking down the street in Chicago or some shit in the middle of winter, on tour, and there was a guy sleeping in a phone booth and he had a Black Sabbath shirt on. Ozzy knocked on the phone booth and woke the guy up. The guy totally freaked out. Ozzy gave him a job filling up all the pails of water and bringing them up onto the stage. Supposedly he has the job to this day. That’s pretty sick.
Favorite Vans rider?
Everybody.
What trick can’t you do that you wish you could?
Kickflip. I’m serious.
What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you?
Nothing, really. Everything bad that’s happened to me ends up being something good.
What are some interests/hobbies outside of skating?
Surfing and that’s about it. I’m pretty boring.
Last good book you read?
I don’t really read. I guess the last book I read half of was The Power of Now. It’s on Oprah’s book club so I had to read it.
Five songs that have to be on a mix tape?
Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath
For how long were you living in Russia?
Six months. It was pretty depressing. At the time it was 1995 and still really Russian and commie. I was 17 at the time. The whole reason I was sent there was my step-dad was there and I dropped out of school and wasn’t doing anything and he’s an ex-Marine and he’s like, “Send him to me!” It was like boot camp for me.
Did it straighten your ass out?
It worked for a little while. Then it wore off again and I started abusing life.
Do you ever miss Russia?
No. I never miss it there. Maybe I wish sometimes I missed the experiences I had there, because when I came back I didn’t take things for granted any more at all because I only ate eggs and bread for six months.
Are you still a big Ted Nugent fan?
Always. I saw him play a couple months ago. And he sucked. He was alright, but he’s like George Bush with a ponytail; it gets a little rough. I like seventies Nugent.
If we could set up a hunting trip for you, Geoff Rowley and The Nuge would you go?
Totally.
Would you be scared that The Nuge might shoot you?
That would be cool if he did, it’d be a good story.
What’s the secret to keeping slick hair slick? Pomade or 50W motor oil?
Just don’t wash it. Cold weather helps too. You wet it down and, if it’s cold enough out, it stays.

Before the internet came along to provide us endless amount
of skate content there was a bi-monthly video magazine called 411

wait in anticipation for the next offering of new footage.
It was the world's first tastes of new guys footage. As a rookie you'd
