When you open up the Skateboard Dictionary and look up the word ‘style,’ no definition will be offered, only a photo of the ruler, Venice Beach, California’s own Christian Hosoi, high above the coping, halfway to the moon with his two hands firmly gripped on a rocket air, decked out in an 80s Technicolor rainbow of flare, eyes already fixated on the next wall and regardless of age or terrain preference you will instinctively know what the word means. Christian turned pro in 1981 and immediately changed what we thought was possible on a skateboard, redefining how even the most basic tricks are supposed to look. He exudes a natural style that has been mimicked many times but never replicated. Hosoi has been an ambassador for skateboarding for over three decades beginning with his early and meteoric rise to the pinnacles of success and stardom to his triumph over the eventual crash and burn which followed. Christian's story makes him revered the world over. And if all that weren't enough, Christian was recently distinguished by TransWorld Skateboarding Magazine as the fourth "most influential skateboarder of all time" in their definitive list of skateboarding's greatest legends.

Any waffle sole works killer.
What’s your set up?

What’s been the best trip you’ve ever been on?
Hawaii is always the best! Family and friends.
What is the best story you’ve ever heard or been told?
That I died doing a big air back in the eighties, but then in January, 2000 I really did die, to myself.
Favorite Vans rider?
Steve Caballero. Longest running signature shoe and he is still killing it with style!
What trick can’t you do that you wish you could?
Backside tailslides and tre flips.
What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you?
Got addicted to drugs.
Worst trend in skateboarding right now?
Trying too hard to be who you aren't. Be you!
What are some interests outside of skating?
Family time, going to church, preaching the Gospel and shooting pool.
Last good book you read?
Bible. It’s living and powerful; piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Five songs that have to be on a mix tape?
Any Gospel blues.
What was the first thing you did when you got out?
Honeymoon with the wife!
What was the first trick?
Backside slash on flat ground. Hawaii Kai skate park, second day out.
What advice would you give to kids that might not feel there’s any way out of a bad situation?
If I can do it, you can do it! With God all things are possible.
Some time has passed yet all photos and footage indicate you’re back on top of your game. Do you feel 100%?
Thankful and humbled by the coverage the mags have been giving me lately! God bless you guys! Still working on getting my knee back to 100% but still having the time of my life skateboarding.
What are some tricks you’re still trying to get back?

What’s the highest Christ Air you ever did?
8 to 10 feet. I want to do them higher on the mega ramp.
How high can you get them these days?
I made one at the Rumble in Ramona, trying it into the night, 5 to 6 foot.
Are you aware of the influence that your hair had on Jim Thiebaud growing that glorious ponytail back in the day?
No! But if it did, that’s killer.
Do you have any advice for the longhairs out there on hair care?
Never care for the hair, if you’re a dude!
You were the originator of flare in skating. What do you think of the flare in modern skateboarding?
It’s killer to see people doing their own thing and being creative with their personality and style.
Do you wear fanny packs anymore?
Last one I wore I got me arrested at the Honolulu International Airport.

2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the Vans Half Cab, the world's longest running, continuously produced signature skate shoe.
