BIO...
Vans since 1999, this Liverpool-born legend has cemented his place as one of the most influential street skaters of all time. Beyond the accolades such as being named Thrasher Magazine's Skate of the Year (2000), Geoff's video parts in each of the Flip Skateboards films demonstrate amazing technical skills and a freakish desire to attempt and land the biggest handrails, stairs and gaps he can find. Geoff's attacking style is often imitated but won't be duplicated in the annals of skateboarding history.
GEOFF ROWLEY INTERVIEW...
What shoes do you skate?
On the board, Rowley Classics and Rowley. Off the board, mostly Era Pro.
What’s your set up?
8-inch Flip deck, 139 Indys, 52MM Ricta naturals, Flip HKD bearings and bolts, Mob grip.
What’s been the best trip you’ve ever been on?
Flip Miami trip 2001 was rad with Arto, Appleyard, Skin and Fred Mortagne. We filmed so much of the Sorry video that week, it was nuts! It was one of those trips where the skating took over the reigns! The latest Flip Feast Tour was also killer; probably the funnest trip to date, fingerboards, good spots, rad people. Truckstop coffee. Desert air.
What is the best story you’ve ever heard?
My friend caught a huge 180 pound cougar in these rimrocks in Colorado and was edging too close for comfort trying to get a photograph, right at that second the cat charged him and bit his camera lens, mouth agape whilst it pressed up against his face, then bounded off down the canyon leaving my friend with his mouth wide open thanking his lucky stars and with a bruised eye socket. A simply astonishing stroke of good luck.
Favorite Vans rider?
Tony Alva, the original bad ass!
What trick can’t you do that you wish you could?
Eggplant. Hands down.
What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you?
Too many to focus on one. Losing close friends and family is earth shattering. Cancer is also tough. As is depression. Alcoholism and drug abuse.
Worst trend in skateboarding right now?
Righteousness and industry burnouts. Love it...or please f@%king leave it.
What are some interests outside of skating?
Predator calling, hunting dogs [a type of dogs, not the activity - ed.] and camping.
Last good book you read?
Slash Ranch Hounds by Dub Evans. Some serious insight into dog/human relations. All first hand knowledge. The other few books I have read after this are also worth a mention. Cougar Killer by Jay Bruce, Mogollon Mountain Man by Nat Straw. The Grizzly by Enos Mills. Meet Mr. Grizzly by Montague Stevens. Lion Tales by Jonathan Kibler. The best book I have ever read is Life of the greatest guide: Hound stories and others of Dale Lee written by Robert McCurdy. Until the day I die, this will hold true.
Five songs that have to be on a mix tape:
Lungfish, Lungfish, Lungfish, Lungfish, and something from Lungfish.
You celebrated 10 years of Signature shoe styles with Vans. What has been the highlight?
Notable names along the way are Dan Sturt and Steve Van Doren, without whom things would have not been worthwhile. I am honored to be involved and have a history with both. Daniel Harold Sturt should be bowed down to by every living skateboard photographer alive today. The fact that I grew up in awe of the pictures and people he shot and then to have him document my skateboarding is simply radical. I was born to ride Vans!
Your shoe designs have really inspired a shift in the rest of skateboarding shoe designs. What’s your take on that?
All other footwear brands sucked. It was that simple. My inspiration for the designs has always come from within Vans. No other brand has such a deep rooted history in skateboarding to work with. None. I delved into this in the beginning and believed in it at a time when Vans needed that. I am very proud of that fact. It took balls. The rest is history.
You’re from Liverpool. Is it required to be a Beatles fan?
Mandatory. They are still the best. The Stones have got nothing on 'em. They did it all.
What’s your favorite Beatles song?
I Am the Walrus. Let's see a modern band pull that kind of song off! Twisted dementia.
Over the past few years you’ve become a woodsman. What inspired that? What do you enjoy about the outdoors?
I sat outside a fox den when I was sixteen. Once they emerged, I was hooked! Badger came next and as I read more books and moved to the USA I became predator addicted; wanting to experience the reality of tooth and fang first hand! The outdoors are the truth and the way; nothing sugar coated. We humans simply do not have it right. We are at the end of a mass die off of life and humans shall be the last to see and do anything about it. We are sick beasts.
Do you hunt? If so, gun or bow and what do you hunt for?
Knives. Humans.
What’s your best fight story?
So Ed Templeton say's to Arto nonchalantly: "Let me get this right. If I put my finger in your water you are going to punch me in the face?" Arto replied, "Yes!" I sat at the table and casually put my finger in Arto's water thinking it would be funny if he actually did punch me. He did! And my assumption was right...it was indeed very funny. It was the first time he had ever hit anybody in the face and I'm proud it was me.
What do you think about snowboard companies involved in skateboarding?
Eat, sleep, dream, suffer and love skateboarding. Or get the f@%ck out. No exceptions.
